Siyakhathala

Honoring Our Elders with Dignity, Care, and Connection

At Abigail Women’s Movement, we believe that older adults are the wisdom keepers of our communities and deserve respect, safety, and companionship in their later years. Our Older Persons Programme (Siyakhathala) is dedicated to supporting elderly individuals in Khayelitsha and surrounding areas through health services, social activities, and advocacy. “Siyakhathala” means “We Care,” and this program embodies our commitment to ensuring that our elders are valued, protected, and connected.

Our Mission

The Siyakhathala program exists to enhance the quality of life for older persons, providing both practical support and social engagement opportunities. Through health and wellness activities, companionship, and advocacy, we empower our elders to live with dignity, well-being, and a sense of community.

What We Offer

  • Health and Wellness Support
We organize regular health and wellness sessions that cover essential topics such as diabetes management, blood pressure control, and mental health awareness. Through partnerships with healthcare providers, we help elders access medical support, ensuring they stay informed and take charge of their health.
  • Psycho-Spiritual and Emotional Support
Many older adults face loneliness and isolation, which can impact their mental health. We provide weekly group sessions focused on emotional and psycho-spiritual support, offering a compassionate space for elders to share, connect, and find solace among friends.
  • Exercise and Physical Therapy
Staying active is essential for well-being, especially in later years. Our program offers gentle exercise sessions and physical therapy to help seniors maintain mobility and physical health. These sessions include stretching, mild aerobics, and activities tailored to each participant’s abilities.
  • Monthly Community Gatherings
Our monthly gatherings bring together seniors to enjoy social time, games, and shared meals. These events foster a sense of community and allow elders to reconnect with friends and make new connections in a supportive, joyful environment.
  • Advocacy and Rights Protection
Many older persons face challenges such as financial abuse, neglect, and violations of their rights. Our advocacy team works tirelessly to protect the rights of older adults, assisting them with grant applications, transportation, and legal referrals when needed. We also provide guidance on navigating local services, ensuring that seniors have access to the resources they deserve.

Why It Matters

In communities facing socio-economic challenges, older adults often become vulnerable to neglect, isolation, and limited access to resources. The Siyakhathala Program is dedicated to filling these gaps by fostering a community that values and cares for its elders. Through holistic support, we create an environment where older persons feel valued, supported, and empowered.

How You Can Help

Here are some ways you can support the Siyakhathala program and make a meaningful impact in the lives of older persons:

  • Sponsor an Elder’s Health Support
Many seniors need assistance with healthcare and medication. Your sponsorship can help cover costs for health checks, physical therapy, and wellness resources, giving elders access to the care they need.
  • Volunteer as a Companion or Facilitator
If you enjoy spending time with seniors, consider volunteering as a companion or activity facilitator. Your presence and kindness can make a significant difference in their lives, providing companionship and meaningful connection.
  • Donate to the Siyakhathala Program
Financial contributions allow us to continue providing health services, community gatherings, and advocacy for older persons. Every donation, large or small, helps bring dignity and care to our elders.
