Food insecurity
Creating Resilient Families through Sustainable Food Security

At Abigail Women’s Movement, we believe that access to nutritious food is a basic right and a foundation for healthy, thriving communities. Our Food Security for Sustainable Households program is designed to address food insecurity by providing direct food support and equipping families with skills and resources to build long-term food resilience. In communities like Khayelitsha, where many face the daily uncertainty of where their next meal will come from, this program brings hope, stability, and sustenance.
Our Mission
The Food Security for Sustainable Households program exists to ensure that children and families have consistent access to nutritious meals. Through immediate food assistance and sustainable practices like home gardening, we help households take control of their food sources, reducing dependency and fostering independence.
Food Security
What We Offer
- Monthly Food Parcels
For families facing food insecurity, our monthly food parcels provide essential nutrition, helping to ease the burden and allowing parents to focus on other critical needs. Each parcel is designed to sustain a family with staples and nutrient-rich foods for health and vitality. - Home Gardening Workshops
Our workshops teach families how to grow their own food right at home, using affordable and accessible methods. Participants learn about seed selection, soil preparation, and plant care, allowing them to cultivate fresh vegetables and herbs to supplement their diets and reduce food expenses. - Nutritional Education
A balanced diet is crucial for long-term health, especially for children’s growth and development. Through our nutritional education sessions, we teach families how to make healthier food choices, plan meals on a budget, and ensure their diets are varied and nutrient-rich. - Sustainable Agriculture Training
For households with the space and interest, we offer additional training on sustainable agriculture techniques. This includes lessons on composting, water conservation, and crop rotation, which enable families to grow food sustainably while respecting the environment. - Community Food Gardens
In partnership with local organizations, we help establish community gardens where families can grow food collectively. These gardens foster a sense of unity and provide an ongoing source of fresh produce for participating families, all while building a stronger, more food-secure community.
Why It Matters
Food insecurity impacts more than just the physical well-being of families—it affects education, mental health, and overall community stability. By providing both immediate support and sustainable solutions, the Food Security for Sustainable Households program helps create a foundation where families can flourish. This program is not just about feeding families; it’s about empowering them to feed themselves.
How You Can Help
Here are some ways to support food security for families in our community:
- Sponsor a Family’s Monthly Food Parcel
A monthly sponsorship helps cover the cost of essential food parcels, ensuring that a family has the nutrition they need. Your contribution can make a real difference in reducing hunger for children and families. - Volunteer in a Community Food Garden
By joining our community gardening efforts, you can help cultivate fresh produce and teach sustainable gardening techniques to local families. - Donate to the Food Security Program
Every donation goes directly to providing food, supplies, and training to families in need. Whether a one-time gift or a monthly contribution, your support is invaluable to building a more food-secure future.
