Building Brighter Futures for Orphaned and Vulnerable Children

At Abigail Women’s Movement, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to grow up in a safe, nurturing environment that fosters hope and potential. The Children’s Programme (Barona) is our dedicated initiative to support orphaned and vulnerable children in Khayelitsha and surrounding communities who have faced significant hardship. Many of these children have lost parents or caregivers due to illness or other circumstances and often face challenges that no child should have to bear alone.

Our Mission

The Barona Program was created to provide consistent, compassionate support to children who need it most. From basic needs like nutritious meals and school supplies to emotional and academic support, Barona is here to bridge the gaps and offer a path forward.

• Academic Support
  Education is key to unlocking future opportunities. Barona provides essential academic support, including school supplies, uniforms, and after-school tutoring. Our team helps children with their studies, creating a positive and supportive environment that encourages learning and growth.
• After-School Care and Safe Spaces
  Every child needs a safe space to learn, play, and simply be a kid. Our after-school program provides a safe environment where children can complete their homework, participate in group activities, and socialize with peers under the guidance of caring adults.
• Holiday Programs
  During school holidays, many children lack access to structured activities and meals. Our holiday programs are designed to keep children safe, engaged, and nourished, with activities that promote learning, creativity, and connection.
• Nutritional Support
  Nutrition is foundational for growth, both physically and mentally. Barona offers regular food support to ensure that children and their families have access to nourishing meals, reducing the risk of food insecurity and helping kids stay healthy and focused.
• Emotional and Grief Counseling
  Many children in the Barona program have experienced loss or trauma. Through grief support groups and one-on-one counseling, we provide a compassionate space for children to heal, process their feelings, and develop resilience.
